The delegation is hosted by Norges Naturvernforbund /Friends of the Earth Norway and will present their documentation to Norwegian and International press in Oslo today, Tuesday 20 May. A private screening for members of the press of a new documentary film will take place from 1 to 3pm at the Parkteatret, Oslo Dokumentarkino (the Oslo Documentary Film Centre). Representatives from the Canadian and Chilean delegation will be available for exclusive press interviews.
Oslo Dokumentarkino will then host a screening of the film - "Calls from the Coast to Cermaq" for the general public. The doors will open at 6 p.m. with the screening starting at 6.30pm.
The delegation consists of a First Nations Indian chief from British Columbia and a Mapuche/Huilliche communities native Indian from Chile. They are joined by Mr David Lane, Executive Director of the T. Buck Suzuki Foundation, Mr Brian Gunn, President of the Wilderness Tourism Association of British Columbia, and Mr Bart Naylor of he Pure Salmon Campaign.
“The calls from the coast” – the message from the coast of Canada and Chile is that Cermaq and Marine Harvest are operating with a double standard in their international operations in Chile and British Columbia, Canada. In addition to causing serious environmental problems and threatening the survival of wild salmon, this hits local population and business both financially and socially. If Cermaq, whose largest shareholder is the Norwegian Government, and Marine Harvest, whose majority shareholder is Mr John Fredriksen, cannot clean up, the message from the delegation is crystal clear: Clear out of Chile and Canada.
Meetings are scheduled for the visiting delegation with among others members of Parliament, the top management of Cermaq and the civil service.
