Carbon dioxide (CO2) along with other greenhouse gases (GHG) warm the surface of the planet naturally by trapping solar heat in the atmosphere. This is a good thing because it keeps our planet habitable. However, by burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil and clearing forests we have dramatically increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere and temperatures are rising. Norges Naturvernforbund believes that conceptions and understanding of the processes and consequences around energy production and consumption need upgrading all over the world, and that improved basicknowledge about central energy and environment is crucial for long term solution of global climate change.

Russian NGOs comment and criticize strategic tasks for Russia set in the President’s article on September 10
On September 10, the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev published an article about national strategic tasks. In it, among five strategic vectors of economic modernization, he named securing the leading role of Russia in efficiency of energy production, transportation and consumption, development and putting to the international market new types of fuel, and development of nuclear technologies. Russian NGOs are sure that Russia must abandon nuclear energy and set a goal to reduce risks of negative impact of technogenic climate change as a priority. Now Russian policy shows no practical steps towards efficient low-carbon energy sector.

Climate views from South
The Norwegian Minister for Environment and Development told today environmentalists from Brazil and Nepal that he is on the restrictive side when it comes to new licenses for oil extraction in Norway. Mr. Solheim participated in an electronic meeting on Norwegian climate policy arranged by Norges Naturvernforbund, Norwegian Rainforest Foundation and Future in Our Hands.
