Proaktiva has worked with NNV for since 2006, and have been active with similar projects since 2000. Proaktiva has a core of dedicated employees with long experience from both environmental NGOs and other organizations. It has gradually increased its competence within education, practical energy issues and policy.
Background:
Macedonia has significant challenges regarding energy supply nad the energy use has serious environmental and climate impacts in the form of air pollution and emission of greenhouse gases. Weak economy makes it difficult for the municipalities to pay the energy bills for heating of kindergartens and schools. Lack of funding for maintenance has also led to poorly insulated classrooms. Macedonia has a cold winter climate, despite its southerly location in Europe. The combination of cold winter climate, poor insulation and insufficient heating leads to unacceptably low indoor classroom temperatures during the winter. The result is a poor learning environment and at times low indoor temperature is a health risk for both teachers and children. Children in kindergartens and primary schools are particularly vulnerable, and the situation can cause long-term effects on their health and education.
