School start for 175 000 SPARE pupils

15. September is school start for more than 175 000 pupils in over 4500 schools that will learn about sustainable energy use through the SPARE project. Norges Naturvernforbund`s school project SPARE (School Project on Application of Resources and Energy) teaches pupils from 17 countries about the connection between energy consumption and environmental consequences.

SPARE comprises three main components:

1. Education in schools, based on a thematic teaching platform that is adapted to all the different countries, and also translated to national languages.
2. Practical action – pupils, teachers and parents are involved in practical energy saving activities at school and at home.
3. Information to local society, i.e. parents, neighbours, local decision makers etc.

SPARE is every year training more than thousand teachers on environment, energy, global climate and resource issues. Also a yearly international competition is being implemented by SPARE. The competition has proven to be an efficient tool to reach a big number of schools, teachers and pupils, and provide them with a possibility to participate with their contributions on an international level.

The educational activities of SPARE have gradually been supplemented by practical energy projects. Energy efficiency in most of our project countries is dramatically low, and we see repeatedly that even simple and cheap measures for improvement of the energy situation are not realized. Norges Naturvernforbund aims to increase knowledge and reduce barriers for application of low cost measures on energy saving and renewable. In 2008 we did practical projects on windows restoration in almost all countries in the region, which was funded by additional means collected in Norway. Georgia, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan has served as pilot countries for energy projects. In Georgia and Tajikistan we have implemented projects on insulation of educational buildings and energy efficient greenhouses, and developed in 2008 a direction of working on a more comprehensive level with energy planning in several pilot villages.
