In 2025, important changes were introduced into Russian legislation, tightening the requirements for foreign agents, as well as other changes aimed at strengthening the responsibility of citizens and reducing their rights and freedoms.
During several years, the situation for the Russian environmental movement has been gradually worse. In 2024, we have seen legal changes that worsen the situation. We have experienced fewer cases of prosecution, but with higher severity.
A scientific review (2024) shows that very little ocean area under Norway’s jurisdiction is yet effectively protected in MPAs or OECMs.
